TSG Builds Synthetic Multi-Purpose Field for U.S. Army Post

U.S. Army Post Williams Stadium Synthetic Turf Multi-Purpose Field

FORT LEE, VA (May 2012) – When a U.S. Army base needed to replace its natural turf field, it turned to Turf Solutions Group. TSG designed and constructed a synthetic turf multi-purpose field for Williams Stadium in Fort Lee, Virginia.

According to the 2010 census, Fort Lee’s population is 3,393. Named after Confederate General Robert E. Lee, it originally served as “Camp Lee,” a division training camp for soldiers in World War I and II. From the Korean War onward, it became Fort Lee. It serves now as a United States Army post and headquarters for the Combined Arms Support Command, the U.S. Army Quartermaster School, Ordnance School, Transportation School, Army Logistics University and Defense Commissary Agency.

TSG faced the challenge of creating a field that would satisfy football, soccer and other sports. It also had to reflect the quality Fort Lee’s rich history and current standing as U.S. Army post.

Working side by side with Centennial Contractors from November 2011 to May 2012, TSG excavated previous material from the pre-existing natural turf field. A sub-grade drainage system was then put in place to carry excess water away from the field. The synthetic turf was installed and game lines were completed for football and soccer.

“The quality of the product and the level of workmanship performing the installation were exactly what we were hoping for,” said Brian Heath, Project Manager of Centennial Contractors. “We also appreciate the hard work done by Turf Solutions Group and a job well done.”

Synthetic turf is more durable than its natural turf counterpart. It can withstand about twice as many sporting events and activities per day than natural turf. For the U.S. Army, this is extremely beneficial, especially considering the intensity of military training and sports.

Fields like Williams Stadium are able to handle the pressure an entire day of sports in just about any weather. It is incredibly easy to switch from a football games to a soccer game with never-fading lines for both sports already in place and no necessary maintenance to repair damage on the field. Less time is spent preparing the field and more time is spent playing and watching games.

Fort Lee has cut down on repairs, costs and time by choosing synthetic turf. Artificial grass does not need to be repainted or cut. Synthetic typically last longer than natural fields under the same pressure and use.

Williams Stadium is used by armed forces today for sporting and local events. It is used as a place of celebration of the past, present and future of Fort Lee and the United States of America. TSG is proud to have been a part of continuing the history of Fort Lee.
